For anyone who wants to function well and get the most out of themselves, it is important to maintain good physical condition. This is only possible if we take proper care of our body and provide it with the necessary nutrients. Our body needs an adequate supply of vitamins, minerals, fats, and proteins.
Vitamins can be divided into two groups:
-
Water-soluble vitamins
-
Vitamin C
-
Vitamin B complex
-
Vitamin H (Biotin)
-
Fat-soluble vitamins
-
Vitamin A
-
Vitamin D
-
Vitamin E
-
Vitamin K
For our health, we need more than just enough vitamins. Minerals are also essential — for example, calcium, which is important for strong bones.
A vitamin deficiency develops gradually. Symptoms that may appear as a result of a deficiency in a specific vitamin include growth problems, fatigue, lack of motivation, or concentration issues.
We do not obtain vitamins solely from food. For example, we also get vitamin D from sunlight. Sunlight on our skin triggers the production of enzymes that help synthesize vitamin D. In winter, it is common for people to have a vitamin D deficiency because the sun is too low in the sky and most UV light is filtered out by the atmosphere. As a result, our skin is unable to produce vitamin D. It also appears that this vitamin D deficiency is linked to the increased incidence of flu during the winter season. In countries where people receive sufficient vitamin D from sunlight year-round, there are no significant flu outbreaks in winter or seasonal illnesses.
