Eating salt increases the craving for fatty meals. Research by Australian scientists also showed that people who sprinkle salt on their food automatically consume more calories.
The study found that the salt content of a person’s diet partly determines how much they eat. The researchers calculated that salt increases calorie intake by 11%.
It was even found that men and women who do not usually have a strong preference for fatty foods ate more when salt was added to the meal.
For this reason, the researchers are convinced that fat alone is not the major, irresistible flavor component driving overeating. Fats are usually found in processed foods, along with two other highly palatable ingredients: salt and sugar. Think of snacks such as chips, pizza, fried foods, and candy.
