On vacation, it’s tempting to let go of all restraints — including your eating habits. So how do you keep it fun andhealthy? With these tips, you can enjoy your holiday without unpleasant surprises when you return home.
-
Keep it balanced. Don’t deprive yourself, but don’t go overboard either. At a buffet, tell yourself: “Today I’ll choose this, and tomorrow I can try that other dish.” Try to make choices instead of eating everything in one meal.
-
If you love tasting everything at a buffet: take just one bite of each dish you really want to try.
-
Eat slowly. This gives your body time to signal when you’re full — which can take up to 30 minutes. Relax and enjoy — it’s vacation, after all!
-
Stick to your usual rhythm as much as possible: 3 main meals and 3 snacks per day.
-
Start your day with a healthy breakfast. Don’t always go for the croissant — try a fresh fruit salad, scrambled eggs, or some yogurt with muesli.
-
Stay well-hydrated by drinking enough water. Often we think we’re hungry when our body is actually just thirsty.
-
Plan ahead: are there supermarkets or produce stands nearby? Then you know you can stock up on healthy options.
-
Airports, gas stations, train stations, and roadside diners offer a lot of unhealthy food. If you know you’re tempted easily, don’t go there hungry — and bring your own healthy snacks for the journey.
And most importantly: enjoy your holiday!
