Difficult thoughts, feelings, and circumstances are part of life. But how can you deal with them in a way that still allows you to enjoy life?
Pause
Take two minutes for yourself and pause. Are there any negative thoughts? Notice them. Then look around. Where are you? Who is with you? Then think about the people in your life and the things you do—both the pleasant and the unpleasant. Acknowledge them and be aware. This gives you a clearer view of your life.
Acknowledge
Acknowledge that pain is part of life. We often feel we have to be strong, not complain, and always stay positive—even when things go wrong. But that’s not necessary. If your father or mother just passed away, if you’re recovering from an accident, or if life feels overwhelming—you’re allowed to feel that pain.
Nickname
Don’t take your thoughts too seriously. If that voice in your head tells you you’re not good enough, too weak, or that you should just get over it—give that voice a silly nickname. This creates distance between you and your thoughts and makes it easier not to take them so seriously.
Time for yourself
We’re often so busy ticking off tasks that we forget about ourselves. Take several small moments a day just for you—even if it’s only 30 seconds. Breathe deeply, look around, take it all in, and feel what’s happening in your body. This can greatly boost your happiness. You’ll notice you’re in the here and now—and that’s essential.
Be kind to yourself
Taking a moment for yourself is already an act of kindness. But allow yourself even more. Choose to honor yourself—take a bath, eat what you’re craving, take a day off, or buy that book you’ve been wanting to read. Just like you would offer kindness to a partner or a friend, you can do the same for yourself—starting today.
