What is fascia?
Fascia is a type of connective tissue in the body that acts like a wrapping or sheath. You can compare it to the thin white membrane you sometimes see when cutting meat. It surrounds muscles, bones, joints, and organs. The healthier your fascia, the fitter and more mobile you feel.
What does fascia do?
Fascia supports and protects your body. Healthy fascia allows for smooth movement and helps keep your organs, bones, and joints in place.
When fascia becomes stiff or tense—often due to prolonged sitting or repetitive movements—it can cause pain and restrict your range of motion.
Tips to Keep Your Fascia Healthy
-
Hydration: Drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day—more if you’re physically active.
-
Movement: Stay active and aim to move daily. Include a variety of movement types (e.g., walking, stretching, dancing, yoga).
-
Fascial stretching: Focus on stretching techniques that specifically target fascia. Foam rolling can also help release tight areas.
-
Massage: Regular massage helps release tension and improves blood circulation in the fascia.
-
Posture: Be mindful of your posture while sitting, standing, and moving. Proper alignment reduces strain on your fascia.
