Salt is very important for our body — but we need barely a tenth of a teaspoon. We eat too much salt, and our body has to work hard to continuously eliminate the excess. Meanwhile, salt raises blood pressure in most people.
We often add salt to our food as a flavor enhancer. In addition to the salt we add ourselves, many foods already contain added salt — think of bread, cheese (such as aged cheese), or cured meats.
When cooking or baking, use raw vegetables! Only then can you be sure that no extra salt has been added. You’d be surprised how much salt is hidden in processed foods.
Try cooking with other flavor enhancers: dried or fresh herbs, garlic, ginger, seaweed, (herb) vinegar, vinaigrette, lemon juice, wine, and so on.
You can also add extra flavor to your meals by stir-frying vegetables or using plant-based oils (such as flavored olive oil) in your cooking.
